Project objective
Water has become one of the central economic, political and regional development themes in Southern Spain over the last decade. Water engineering, distribution and re-allocation has become highly contested terrain politically, while economically central for regional rural/urban economic development in Southern Spain. Our research aims at analysing the politics of water in the context of the economic development needs of Andalusia. In particular, the policy environment and regional economic implications of the national hydrological plan, proposing the largest combined hydrological works to date in the European Union, will be our main focus. In particular, attention will be paid to the interaction between regional, national and European level decision-making processes and their interrelations. The examination of the Southern Spanish case, although specific given its semi-arid conditions, may shed light on newly emerging social, economic and political conflicts around water use and allocation throughout the European Union.
