International economic integration and technology transfer. The evolution of foreign direct investment in the European Union

Project objective

This research aims at examining the economic integration impact on market structure and FDI in the European Union. It will emphasize the aspects more relevant to the technology transfer and the eventual imbalances in the patterns of development among different EU regions. A paucity of evidence exists on the link between capital/knowledge accumulation effects and location effects of the economic integration process. With respect to this, the still controversial conclusions reached by the theory on the relationship between regional integration and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), together with the complex set of problems relating to data collection and interpretation, suggest the importance of further empirical investigations. In particular, the project aims at shedding some light on the following questions: - is there any empirical evidence in order to differentiate the inward/outward FDI flows as a function of the level achieved by the integration process?; - is there a correspondence between the theoretical insights on the impact of economic regionalism on location and the actual geographical and sectoral patterns of intra-EU (and inward EU) FDI flows and stocks? - is it possible to identify agglomeration processes, both for production and technology, which may cause convergence problems among the EU regions? - what kind of trade, industrial and technological policies is to be envisaged in order to reduce adjustment costs?
