Project objective

The objective of this project is to test the static and dynamic mechanical properties of alloys, primarily of aluminium, produced with a non-dendritic structure via a semi-solid metal processing route. Currently an experimental rig is under development at the host institution which will enable a range of non-dendritic structures to be produced in the test alloy, in a controlled manner. The dendritic structure of the alloy will be fragmented by shear of the material when it is in its semi-solid state. The applicant, on a return grant, will assist with the control of the experimental process, subsequently assess the mechanical properties (tensile, fracture toughness and fatigue resistance) of test samples, and investigate the mechanisms of deformation. Thus the shear conditions for optimum final microstructure will be determined. It is envisaged that alloys with superior mechanical properties to conventional dendritic alloys will be manufactured, with associated economic and environmental benefits.
