Development and comparison of algorithms for structural shape optimization using h- and p-adaptive finite element methods

Project objective

The ADOPT group led by Professor Hinton at the University of Wales, Swansea, is actively involved in structural shape optimization using the finite element method. Their research into and development of this new addition to finite element techniques has attracted considerable industrial interest in addition to obtaining funds from schemes such as HCM and ESPRIT IV etc.. Currently the optimization is performed using the h-version of the f.e.m.. This project proposes to develop this code by adding the capability to perform the optimization using p- extensions. This addition will further enhance the ability of the code. The development of suitable benchmark tests for optimization problems is also a part of the project brief. Currently no tests exist which are suitable. Comparison of the performance of the h-method and the new p-method will be undertaken. Routines which will reduce the solution time for optimization problems will also be developed.
