Multidisciplinary evaluation of the diagenetic and weathering signature on the paleomagnetic record from neogene to recent sediments

Project objective

The proposed research aims at achieving an interdisciplinary in-depth analysis of the impact of the diagenetic and weathering processes on the paleomagnetic record of some marine sediments. For this purpose a variety of both rock magnetic, petrographic observations and geochemical techniques will be employed. Further, a suite of multivariate statistical techniques will be applied to interpret the data and thus the development of new interpretational approaches is envisaged. This will contribute to a more rigorous knowledge of the acquisition mechanisms of the paleomagnetic signal in sedimentary rocks, which is of urgent need before adequate and meaningful interpretations can be gathered from the available high-resolution paleomagnetic records. In the underlying proposal both land-based Neogene marine sequences as well as available (piston) cores will be targeted permitting thus to evaluate the (potentially) varying influence of diagenesis and weathering. In conjunction, the validity of currently applied criteria for paleointensity determinations will be assessed.
