Project objective
Lately the focal point of research in theoretical and experimental condensed-matter physics has evolved towards new and exciting horizons. New materials have been discovered (high-temperature superconductors, quantum nanostructures, ...) posing challenging new questions for novel phenomena. The potential technological applications of these many-body systems are the dreams of the future new industries. However, much of the fundamental understanding of their basic physics is still missing and any progress in theoretical understanding will deeply influence future developments. Strong disorder is involved as a rule, as well as strong interactions and the appearance of phenomena in the mesoscopic range. The applicant will spend 12 months in the research group of Professor Peter Fulde at the MPI fur Physik der Komplexer Systeme being set up in Dresden (Sachsen, D). This period will be of substantial benefit for the applicant, relieved of heavy teaching duties and able to interact with experts, as well as for the Sachsen young researchers who would interact with an expert from outside Germany.
