Project objective

The formation of long-term memory is assumed to depend on the synthesis of new molecules or modifications of pre-existing ones, which contribute to more or less permanent functional changes in synaptic connections, thus shaping preferred pathways as the neural substrate of memory trace. The molecular mecanisms involved in triggering the synthesis of learning and memory related molecules are reported to involve the initial activation of c-fos and c-jun, and numerous data exist about the possible involvement of these two proto-oncogenes in learning and memory. Cell adhesion molecules have also been implicated in learning and memory in different studies, and results obtained support the view that neural adhesion molecules, and in particular N-CAM and L1, may play important roles in stabilisation of memory traces. The aim of my work could be to determine in different models of transgenic mice, using immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization, if there is a link between c-fos/c-jun expression and N-CAM/Ll functions and synthesis in learning conditions.
