Causal explanation in history - pupils' ideas in England and Spain

Project objective

The Council of Europe has stated the crucial importance of history in the school curriculum. Today, historical knowledge in the European Union is affected by cultural biases and could not be considered autonomous. Few studies have focused on understanding to what extent cultural differences and educational programmes influence pupils' historical understanding. In this proposal, history learning at school will be evaluated in England and Spain. The project will explore pupils' understanding of the nature of history and the ways on which students apprehend the subject. It will do so by focusing on second-order concepts, particularly in causal explanation. The exploration oF pupils' ideas will be performed through a cross-cultural and cross-sectional study. The main objective is to investigate the basis for progression in adolescent pupils' understanding of history (causation) and to study the differences arising in two distinct cultural contexts.
