Project objective
At the University of Cambridge, Applied Mathematics, and under the supervision of Dr. N. Peake, I hope to study the interaction of vorticity with a rotating blade row of an aeroengine, enabling the prediction and understanding of the generation of sound of such engines. This three-year Ph.D. study could make a significant contribution to Europe's efforts to contain the aircraft noise pollution around its airports. Peake has developed solutions for the case that the blade row consists of flat, zerothickness blades. The proposed research aims at determining the effects of camber and thickness of the blades on the sound generation. The principle mathematical tool will be asymptotic analysis, although other analytical and numerical methods will also be applied to the fields of acoustics and unsteady aerodynamics.
