Project objective
Two-dimensional spectral analysis is an extremely powerful tool in the interrogation of spatial data since it assumes no structural characteristics in the data (such as directional effects) prior to analysis. The host supervisor has made substantial progress in developing both spectral techniques and associated test procedures for lattice data, and has applied these in biology, forest science, geology and meteorology. The next stage is to extend these results to nonlattice situations (e.g. tree heights and locations, or major earthquake centres) - called marked point processes. He is currently developing spectral techniques for analysing such processes, but the problem of establishing formal statistical test procedures still remains. Rosa Capobianco is ideally suited to work with me on this project; the research training she would receive would have a substantial impact on the research potential of her department in the new University of Benevento.
