Project objective

Though deep earthquakes were first discovered by Turner at Oxford in 1922, their source characteristics still remains poorly understood. The goal of this project is to obtain better physical insight into the source mechanics of deep earthquakes by a systematic analysis of all available digitally-recorded teleseismic data at depths ranging from crustal to the deepest ones (about 680 km). The spectrum of groups of earthquakes at different depths, having the same size, fault mechanism and duration, will be computed and their spectral characteristics will be compared to obtain any systematic behaviour with depth. Effect of the structure is minimized by the method of choice of events. Finally the seismic moment tensor and the source time function for deep and shallow earthquake groups will be extracted, using a waveform inversion technique partially developed by the applicant. Presence of non-double couple components, if any, will be investigated for the deep earthquakes.
