Project objective
Micro-organisms excrete low-molecular weight chelators, siderophores, in response to iron deficiency. Most siderophores are hexadentate ligands which form highly stable six-coordinate complexes with iron. In contrast the bis(catecholamide) siderophore N,N-(2,3-dihydroxybenzoyl)-L-lysine of Azotobacter vinelandii, is ideally suited for binding the four vacant coordination sites of MoO2 . The aim of this proposal is to determine the chemical design features which enable bis- and triscatecholate siderophores of A. vinelandii and their analogues to discriminate between Fe(III) and Mo(VI), to study the redox behaviour of these complexes, and to determine the role they play in the siderophore-mediated transport of Mo in A. vinelandii. This study of may lead to specific sensing applications, and to a better understanding of the chemistry underlying the initial biological transformations of Mo.
