Project objective

I Research objectives and content Ultrasonic catheter scanners prove valuable in fundamental studies of development of arterial disease and predict the treatment most appropriate for patients. However they are very limited in the way the scans can be performed. The inability to view in a forward direction also limits the use of Doppler blood flow techniques. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the best scanning methods for forward viewing and 3D imaging with catheter scanners. This project will be undertaken with scaled-up tissue equivalent models of diseased arteries of say 50mm diameter which are suitable for imaging with 5MHz ultrasound transducers. This scaling up makes the construction of test devices very much easier than attempting to develop them on the true arterial scale. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) In this project the student would gain a detailed knowledge of medical imaging and in particular ultrasonic imaging which is a major diagnostic tool in routine clinical examinations and medical research. The student will also gain experience in medical image pro_ssing, digital electronics, research methods and clinical imaging as well as working with an research team of scientists and doctors. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) No industrial links at present. However if successful, the results would be of industrial interest.
