Polarization in electromagnetic processes

Project objective

The applicant will (a) help formulate and define the experimental programme of the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA) and (b) apply the techniques he used during his Human Capital and Mobility Fellowship at NIKHEF in the study of exclusive reactions on hadronic and nuclear systems. Specifically, with respect to (a) the applicant will determine optimal choice of kinematical conditions and targets for precision electron-scattering experiments at the Athens RTM, a high-intensity Cascade Race Track Mictrotron with polarized beam capabilities, currently under construction by IASA. A substantial amound of funding is invested into this machine, which will be the leading accelerator facility in this part of Europe. With respect to (b) the applicant will continue his investigations on the role of unitarity in two-step exclusive reactions. Such reactions are one of the high priority topics in the recently approved TMR European Network for Hadronic Physics with Electromagnetic Probes, in which the theory teams of both NIKHEF and the University of Athens actively participate. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This Return Grant will allow the integration of the applicant into the research activities of his country of origin. The applicant's expertise in electromagnetic interactions using polarization closely matches the research objectives of the experimental programme of IASA and the activities of the theory team at the University of Athens. The proposed investigations will have a significant impact, as they will shape an experimental programme of scientific importance and considerable cost. The chosen topics constitute a logical continuation of the research activities the applicant has persued during his carreer and will preserve and solidify the links with leading Universities and Facilities in Europe and overseas.
