Project objective
The proposed project is dedicated to the kinematics of the stars in our Galaxy. Its aim is a detailed investigation of the kinematical properties of the galactic disk on the basis of accurate astrometric data. Absolute proper motions of about 30000 stars in a region close to the galactic anticenter will be measured, herein combining the treasure of early epoch photographic observations from the beginning of the century with modern observations to be obtained by the new technique of CCD driftscanning. The measurements will be tied to the Hipparcos/Tycho reference frame and hence profit from the advantages of this new absolute system. They will reach fainter magnitudes and higher proper motion accuracy than current star catalogues. The results will help to extend and improve our knowledge of the kinematics of different disk populations and shed light on the underlying dynamics of the Galaxy. Besides the scientific benefits, the project will give practical experience and training on new techniques of obervation and measurements, which will be of importance in future astrometric programs.
