Project objective

Research objectives and content Content of the project: Anomalies in quantum field theory are being studied from various, quite different points of view. Recently, new mathematical tools have been developed which allow to study anomalies from corresponding viewpoints in noncommutative geometry. This study will provide first entries in a dictionary between quantum field theory and basic quantities used in noncommutative geometry. The pseudodifferential calculus for general spectral triples and the related version of the Wodzicki residue will be the main tools for the project. Objectives of the project: The project aims towards a definition of a path integral in noncommutative geometry. The pseudodifferential calculus for spectral triples and other notions in noncommutative geometry are expected to be powerfull tools for this purpose which ultimately will allow to narrow the gap between the language of noncommutative geometry and that of quantum field theory. Because of the wider generality of the `noncommutative point of view' and the new interpretation of gauge transformations as `fluctuations of the metric', this project could shed new light on the nature and the source of anomalies. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) With respect to the needed skills (quantum field theory, noncommutative geometry, geometric analysis) the IHES is the ideal place to carry out the project, because it gathers in a unique way exellent experts in these fields. The possibility to work with A. Connes, K. Gawedzki and D. Sullivan and to discuss with visitors provides a perfect training in quantum field theory and the mathematical background of noncommutative geometry. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
