The organizational dynamics of open multi-agent systems

Project objective

A multi-agent system or MAS is a collection of autonomous or semi-autonomous agents that constitute a single functional unit. Traditionally, researchers in Artificial Intelligence have been focusin on closed systems featuring a fixed number of agents. In reality, however, most systems are open and allow agents to migrate. The MAGMA group at Leibniz has been investigating open systems for several years and has identified a number of key issues. Because of the migration of agents in open systems, changes in their organisation are inevitable. The study of the organisational dynamics of such systems constitutes a interesting research project. Particularly interesting is the question how the functional integrity o an open system can be maintained. This leads us to the study of the nature of functionality. We want to investigate early evidence that functionality is in the eye of the beholder who attributes it to observed systems. From this point of view, systems evolve by different criteria than those handled by the observer. We specifically want to study the evolution of entropy in the organisation of MAS. The MAGMA group at Leibniz is an excellent environment to study the organisation of multi-agent systems. Few laboratories have been as active in this sub-field as MAGMA. Consequently, we not only envision the successful realisation of a PhD program, we also expect real scientific progress. The relevance of research in multi-agent systems to the telecommunications industry is becoming increasingly clear. We plan to build an telecom application to validate our theoretical research.
