Project objective

Research objectives and content A wide spectra of different phase transitions is observed in A2BX4 compounds. The mechanisms of them seem to be closely related to stereochemical criteria. Also a relation with the bond valence sums of the A-cations is likely. Obviously these parameters provide a basis for the prediction of phase transitions in these materials and maybe also in other substances. In some of the A2BX4 compounds phase transitions have been observed, in others they are predicted on the basis of the above mentioned criteria. The aim of this project is to verify the existence of these predicted phase transitions and also to carry out accurate crystal structure determinations on the different phases to gather more detailed information. With these it may be possible further to specify the relationship between phase transitions and the stereochemical criteria, thus achieving an important progress in the prediction of phase transitions. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Working on the project will help to provide far-reaching knowledge of phase transitions and how to detect them experimentally. X-ray diffraction experiments at different temperatures will lead to experience with the special problems involved in measurements. Knowledge in crystal structure determination is further improved.
