Project objective

Research objectives and content The increasing interest in the formal specification of mobile systems is justified by the distinguished nature of recent distributed systems like, for instance, mobile telephones. Once a concurrent system has been formally specified, analyzing and verifying it in a rigorous way becomes a crucial issue. Specifying and verifying properties of mobile processes are quite delicate and under-investigated issues. The difficulty mainly comes from the fact that classical modal logic lack facilities for generating, parametrizing, transmitting, and quantifying names, which are typical features of languages for the description of mobile systems. Also, the prevailing checking techniques apply only to finite-state processes, while reasoning about true finite-state mobile processes is actually too restrictive since even the simplest finite-control mobile process exhibits an infinite-state behaviour. The candidate plans to built on the results obtained during her PhD studies, in order to find out either adequate logic for the description of the properties of suitable classes of non finite-state mobile processes, or proof systems and algorithms for the verification of those properties. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Either logic, or semantics, or automata theory, or complexity theory are involved in the research project. So, the training is highly promising, since it is a cross-fertilization of the above disciplines and semantics of mobile processes. On the one hand, BRICS can provide strong background and ongoing research works on logic, semantics, complexity, and verification. On the other hand, the candidate's background is especially oriented to semantic reasoning about mobile systems, and the research plan builts on the candidate's PhD work.
