Senegalese socio-cultural integration and exclusion in Europe - a study of institutional practices and migrants transnational networks in Emila-Romagna

Project objective

This project seeks to assess the efficiency of local policies toward immigrants and to evaluate the integrative capacity of migrants' Own organisations. This will be done through detailed investigation of Senegalese transnational migrants in a specific context within Italy (Emilia Romagna) exploring the interplay of two social phenomena: 1) The everyday life and strategies of immigrants in relating to the host context, and their reliance on transnational networks, based on kinship religious belonging and rooted in the sending context. 2) The representations of immigrants in the local receiving context, and the institutional practices which these imply. In doing so, I will test the historical validity and theoretical viability of categories such as integration" and "exclusion" applied to contemporary post-industrial Europe. Therefore, this case study will be located in a wider, comparative literature concerning France, where other Senegalese immigrants live, thus enabling the research to generate hypotheses about migrants' integration in different EU countries. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Sussex University has a long-term ethnographic tradition, that is lacking in Italy, and the CDE shows a strong interest in migration, social exclusion, identity, representations and practices. These are the reasons why I find in this institution a suitable environment for my training and for my supervision. "
