Project objective
The topic of Vision-Based Robot Navigation involves issues particular to computer vision methodologies, pattern recognition, motion planning, postgraduate training activities that address the development of intelligent robotic systems able to navigate in (partially) unknown and perception and machine learning. The young researchers to be employed are expected to have expertise in one of these areas. Through their possibly changing environments. This goal will be achieved through a framework which enhances RTD activities in European laboratories, already involvement in VIRGO, they will acquire experience in at least another one established in the aforementioned scientific area. Specifically, in of the above areas and, moreover, will develop insights in the general pursuing this goal, alternative environment representations based on visual scientific area of the project. Moreover, they will experience the working practices of the different information will be studied and methods to process these representations and use them to control the motion of the mechanical parts of a robot will hosting sites, they will participate in the Network workshops and present be developed. their work in conferences and, finally, through the involvement of The proposal focuses on the use of visual information in robot industry in VIRGO, they will make contacts with companies and acquire navigation (perhaps combined with the information provided by other valuable experience with respect to the working procedures of European industry and related work opportunities. non-visual sensors), which will further enhance the navigational capabilities of a mobile platform, compared to traditional approaches that are confined to simple motion tasks (obstacle avoidance, wall following, etc.). In acquiring and processing the visual information, our approach is based on the Active and Qualitative vision paradigm, which offers many advantages for the particular task. The network will strive for the broader possible dissemination of the results and for industrial exploit-ation.
