Project objective
The objective of this multidisciplinary network is the preparation and characterisation of functionalised, switchable, ordered arrays of network. Postdocs will be trained in the disciplines of their parent derivatised benzylic amide catenanes (BAC's) which can form the basis of laboratories and all will spend time in other labs working on mutual tasks. complex, multifunctional materials. BAC's are a newly discovered class of Oral and written reports will be given by the postdocs at the eight-interlocked molecular rings, simple to synthesise in bulk quantities. Their monthly meetings of the network. architectures and controllable dynamic properties make them excellent candidates for exploitation in materials research. Property changes will be brought about by manipulating functional units separated by a catenane 'hinge' using external stimuli (light, electrons, etc). First, however, a detailed understanding of the dynamic processes involved is necessary in order to design and assemble such systems. The multidisciplinary study will encompass all aspects of BAC structure, dynamics and properties by specialists in synthesis, crystallography, spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, doping, surfaces and quantum calculations. Each team has been assigned individual and joint tasks necessary for the Network to complete project milestones.
