Project objective

The spontaneous formation and evolution of ordered and disordered (chaotic) patterns in macroscopic nonequilibrium systems in physics, chemistry and researchers, since a variety of high-level techniques are put to work in a materials science will be studied experimentally, theoretically and by truly interdisciplinary effort. Many of these techniques have broad applicability in many fields of science and technology. Furthermore the computer simulations, with a leading role attributed to experimentation. university environments provide opportunities for broader educational Emphasis is put on complex materials and the inclusion of realistic effects like noise and perturbations. The systems to be studied include (1) tasks. interfacial instabilities (faceted dendritic growth in liquid crystal interfaces, directional solidification in various materials and variants of Saffmann-Taylor fingering), (2) hydrodynamic instabilities (electroconvection in liquid crystals, magnetic fluids, binary fluid mixtures), (3) oscillatory chemical instabilities and (4) granular media. The theoretical work will regard system-specific aspects as well as general (universal) properties, best expressed by amplitude equations, often coupled to additional fields. The development of techniques to include noise in these nonlinear nonequilibrium systems represents a particular challenge.
