LASER GUIDE STAR for 8-METER CLASS TELESCOPES

Project objective

Expertise is high in Europe for implementing the challenging laser guide The network will organize yealy workshops to allow young researchers to get a comprehensive picture of laser guide star technology (Fourier optics, star concept at the four projects for 8-meter telescopes which European astronomers are involved with. Only laser guide stars will provide a large lasers, image processing). They will be trained to run laser guide stars at or full sky coverage for diffraction limited imaging with adaptive the 8-meter telescopes, and for European industry developing the second generation of turn-key systems. This will justify the time senior scientits optics.This expertise is mostly spread over the teams which propose to build a tight collaboration plan to boost solving theoretical and will devote to their education experimental problems of the laser guide star. Products will be a review of astrophysical objectives versus technical constraints, a detailed study of operational issues (safety,light pollution, laser configuration) and the development of advanced wavefront sensing. Key products will be a code for simulating the whole atmosphere/ adaptive-optics/laser-guide-star process, and the indepth analysis of the feed-back for 8-meter telescopes from the national experiments.
