Project objective

Acoustic forces produced by resonant ultrasonic fields on suspended The training aspect is characterized in that the competences in two disciplines, namely the fundamental physics and electronics background of particles in any dispersion (suspension, emulsion) can be utilized for the separation of the particles and the fluid. The main objectives of the the ultrasonic separation system and the knowledge in microbiology needed for the applications in modern biotechnology are combined in a unique way. proposed network are (a) the further development of this separation principle by evaluating the feedback from the application fields and (b) The gained human capital are Euro Scientists in these potentially growing interdisciplinary field. the stimulation of progress in biotechnology by introduction of acoustic cell retention and cell separation systems and (c) the stimulation of progress in the process and waste water treatment by ultrasonic emulsion splitting. Main emphasis is given to the application field biotechnology, since most recent spectacular results obtained here with the ultrasonic cell retention principle indicate a high potential for respective impacts to this field. In particular, the areas of high density cell cultures, downstream processing, as well as food and beverage are treated in dedicated subtasks. More specialized subtasks, as cell analysis and washing, and the substitution of the missing gravity forces in space lab bioreactor technology by ultrasonically generated particle levitation forces are investigated in addition. The resulting high performance ultrasonic separation systems consisting of resonator chambers and control electronics may also become the seed equipment of a new technology for process and waste water cleaning. This network would extend Europes present kernel position in the ultrasonic field / particle interaction research.
