Project objective
Research objectives and content Study of the upper mantle deformation by modeling the development of a seismically anisotropic structure due to a specific flow process. This simulation corresponds to successive steps: 1- Thermo-mechanical modeling of the finite strain field generated by a given geodynamic process 2- Modeling of the crystallographic fabrics generated by this strain field 3- Using these fabrics, calculation of the 3D elastic properties of the medium; 4- Modeling of shear waves propagation through this medium. I propose to acquire the seismic modeling skills and interface the different models. Predictions will be compared with seismic (analysis of shear-wave splitting measurements) and petrofabric data (acquired using Leeds' SEM techniques). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Acquire skills in: (1) Analysis of teleseismic data. (2) Theory of wave propagation in anisotropic media. (3) Seismic modeling. (4) SEM petrofabric analyses. This training, associated with my present skills, will result in a scientific profile that spans various disciplines of the Earth Sciences: Structural Geology, Geodynamics, and Seismology, providing me a strong foundation for the study of the tensorial physical properties of rocks, whose effects on the upper mantle and crustal evolution are still largely unknown. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) This project may lead to a refinement of seismic investigation techniques used in oil and mineral exploration. This will be particularly useful in areas of intense deformation, like salt diapirs or shear zones.
