Project objective

Soil erosion has been recognized to be governed by rainfall characteristics (rainfall intensity, drop size distribution, drop velocity in various combinations), among other factors (soil structural composition, vegetation cover, soil surface slope). The aim of these proposal is to study the relationships between the rainfall characteristics measured with the improved OSP (Optical Spectro Pluviometer) on one hand and splash detachment rates, structural changes of the top soil and the related infiltration response on the other hand. Objectives are i) a better prediction of the erosion rates and the hydrological response of various soils and soil surface states when subjected to rains of various characteristics and ii) the development of a physically-based model predicting splash detachment rates and rates of physical soil degradation under rain. Using the OSP to study erosion processes under rain offers unprecedented possibilities and opens the perspective to extend the fields of application of the OSP from surface hydrology toward soil degradation studies.
