Project objective
The project aims to develop the applicant's practical knowledge of fullerene chemistry which will enhance his understanding of the reactivity patterns of the cage and broaden his exposure to synthetic methods. The work is desirable at a time when fullerenes are under comprehensive examination world-wide. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The main objectives of the project arise from a novel cycloaddition to the fullerene C60, discovered by the applicant. The resulting cycloadduct will act as a starting point for developing new functional chemistry of the cage and addends thereof and will usefully further our understanding of the chemical behaviour of fullerenes. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Fullerenes are already showing considerable promise as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and as optoelectronic devices in which the cages are often deposited on surfaces. Existing links with Industry (BP and Zeneca) will be exploited so that all new compounds resulting from the project will be routinely tested for their potential under these headings.
