Project objective

The development of WDM communication networks with increasing capacity puts high requirements on wavelength selective elements such as light sources, multiplexer and cross-connects. Advanced light sources play a vital role for performance and reliability of optical networks.. The proposed project contains detailed experimental and theoretical studies that focus on the important aspect of the spectral stability of laser sources. 1. Analysis and optimization of spectral characteristics of semiconductor lasers 2. Fundamental limits of laser sources within optical networks architectures 3. Design and characterization of fiber lasers and their comparison with semiconductor lasers Unlike many strategies in laser development, the proposed project directly takes into account all important aspects of implementing the laser sources into optical networks. A research program in this field is expected to give detailed recommendation for optimized laser sources that are indispensable for future improvement in network performance.
