Project objective

Research objectives and content The main part of the work involves further development of the theory of vibronic coupling in a variety of new situations. In all the cases, the topics to be developed will be those which are of most interest to the two Departments involved in the project and the most relevance and interest to the International scientific community. During the two years of research work the following points will be developed: 1.- Calculations of the relative strengths of the coupling of various impurities to their surrounding lattice. 2.- Develop a general theory for vibronic coupling which works for all Jahn-Teller systems. 3.- Application of the developed theory to the experimental studies about Jahn-Teller Cr2+ impurities in alkaline-earth halides 4.- Investigate the mechanisms for 'hopping' and 'tunnelling' between the minima in the potential surfaces. 5.- Vibronic coupling effects in the C60 molecule. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The main objective of this project is to train the experimentalist candidate in the theoretical work, participating in the work activities of the Nottingham group and also calculating about her own experimental results in Jahn-Teller impurities in alkaline-earth halides. A large benefit can be obtained because of the interaction and cooperation between the two Departments belonging to theoretical and experimental physics.
