Project objective

The project consists in a detailed study of the role of condensation in the atmospheres of the hydrogen-helium planets. These planets are extremely interesting for their differences with Earth: they form heavy clouds'', have no surface and possess a significant internal heat flux. A recent theory for the structure of convecting atmospheres and a Cloud Ensemble Model will be adapted to these planets. The calculations will be constrained by spectroscopic and refractivity measurements. Expected results include understanding recent measurements in the atmosphere of Jupiter by the Galileo probe, and better calculations of the cloud structure of newly discovered extrasolar giant planets. Finally, it will help to understand the constraints that convection places on the structure of the Earth's atmosphere, which is of crucial importance in understanding the climate system. The project will strongly benefit the candidate by providing training in research techniques in meteorology, including large-scale numerical modeling. "
