Project objective
We propose a quantitative ab initio study of new particles containing heavy b and c quarks to provide predictions, for experimental searches at CERN and DESY. We will use new techniques being developed at Glasgow for non-relativistic systems in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), together with supercomputer lattice simulations. Combining nonrelativistic b quark propagators from Glasgow code with relativistic c quark propagators from the UKQCD collaboration, will give most accurate results to date. Calculations will include: the excitation spectrum of the Bc system, its decay constant, the form factor of the semi leptonic decay to the charmonium system and the spectrum of exotic hybrid mesons containing heavy quarks and gluonic excitations. Besides further education in theoretical and experimental aspects of heavy quark physics, this project provides training in the techniques of non-relativistic lattice QCD and the sophisticated multi-exponential fitting routines which reduce systematic errors in lattice results. Training in the programming of MIMD parallel supercomputers (e.g. CRAY T3D, J90) is also provided. This will enable a future independent research programme in the burgeoning area of heavy quark physics.
