Project objective

The goal of this thesis is to understand which physical processes are the main ones responsible for setting galaxy morphologies. For this, the morphological, photometric, and chemical evolution of galaxies are simulated within the context of a hierarchical universe. The steps are the following : 1) Lay down the initial density field. 2) Estimate the epoch of halo virialisation. 3) Consider gas cooling within virialised halos. 4) Add star formation at galaxy collapse and galaxy encounters, with feedback on the surrounding gas from supernovae. 5) Set and evolve galaxy morphologies, considering the epoch of galaxy formation. galaxy merging, rapid non-merging collisions, ram pressure stripping. tidal disruption of proto-disks. 6) Add in photometric and chemical evolution. 7) Iterate on the cosmological parameters, the included physics and their parameters to fit the observational constraints (luminosity functions, counts, fundamental planes. morphological segregation, colour and metallicity versus morphological type and luminosity, IGM metallicity versus environment). Because of the subject and method of the project, sud a work will permit me to enlarge and improve my preparation in many atrophysical fields, as well as in mathematical techniques. The possibility of working at the IAP will also be a good opportunity for me to fully enter the international scientific community.
