Project objective
Research objectives and content I propose to use computer modelling experiments to investigate the variability of the Mediterranean thermohaline circulation as a response to different patterns of heat and moisture fluxes at the surface. The results help to understand how much of the variation is due to the internal variability of the circulation, and how much is due to external forcing. The work will also help to improve the parameterization of air-sea-interaction. Emphasis is laid on working with flux patterns which are relevant to the evolution of the Mediterranean at present and in the past. A particular focus will be the evolution over the last decades, where abundant observational data are available and a number of variations in the circulation have been observed, and the time of the last deglacation, where the sedimental records suggest that fundamental changes of the circulation have occurred. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I will gain experience in the field of climate system modelling and greatly benefit from the active research environment and the expertise on ocean dynamics in Edinburgh.
