Project objective
Research objectives and content Analyse and model decision strategies for the public authorities responsible of an urban network concerning: - the optimal joint location of traffic detection equipment and VMS (Variable Message Signs) in order to analyse traffic conditions, provide motorist with up-to-date informations and, in fine, reduce the congestion, - the optimal assignment on the congested network of all its public transportation and service vehicules. The location problem will be decomposed according to several decision levels: - the motorists choose their paths dynamically following messages displayed on VMS, - the location of VMS, of detection equipment and the choice of messages displayed depend on average and real-time traffic conditions and on the expected behaviour of motorists. The assignment problem will be handled through by-level programming techniques, where the opposed decisions of motorists and authorities are embedded in an extension of the classical user-equilibrium model. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project will allow me to benefit from the vast experience of SMG members in the fields of traffic modelling and location theory and to apply my experience of mathematical programming theory to challenging real-world problems. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The methods designed will be tested on real-size problems provided by the Brussels Region administration in the scope of the european project CAPITALS.
