Project objective
Research objectives and content The overall aim of the proposed work is to develop capacity equations for such joints under moment loadings which are suitat design purposes. Since the strength of overlapped Kjoints is best related to that of similar gap joints, the strength of gap Kjoin also be included in this study. The overall aim will be achieved by the following specific objectives: 1. Establish, through circumspect validation and calibration, FE models that can give accurate predictions of stren+ overlapped and gap Kjoints under in-plane and out-of-plane bending loadings. 2. Using the models develop in (1), conduct a parametric study to investigate the effects of the various geometric and lo parameters on strength. 3. Establish strength databases for joints failing in different modes - weld cracking, brace yieldingtlocal buckling and bending - under each loading condition. 4. Develop design guidelines to predict failure modes as well as strength. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The candidate will be able to acquire skills in using the finite element method in solving complex structural problems a.. develop an insight into the formulation of design guidelines in offshore engineering practice. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The findings of this research will fill a vacuum in current offshore design codes and guidance documents and will prove to be o great benefit to offshore structural engineers, whether they are involved in the assessment of existing jackets or the design of ne platforms. The projects forms part of an extensive research programme which receives supports from several industrial collaborator
