Project objective
In nearly perfect crystals at low temperatures the carriers mean free path can be in the mm range and may be in the dimensions of the sample. If nonequilibrium carriers are sent out thermoelectrically from a small source (0 15 fm) at one sample surface they generate a current distribution at the other sample surface, which is characteristic of the materials band structure. This current distribution (electron focusing pattern) can be detected by a point contact and is extremely anisotropic. It is a kind of finger print of the Fermi surface of the corresponding material. Electron focusing patterns have been detected in Bi, Ag, W and Sb. The subject of the proposal is 1. the investigation of other metals (Gold, Iridium, Copper,...) such as other kinds of materials . (Superconductors and Semiconductors). 2. The spectral composition of the signal, the distribution function of the carriers and their spatial variation as well as the details of the transport and the exact way in which the collector point contact detects them 3. The new cryogenic mocropositioning device is a very useful tool. Within the framework of this project it will be used for the space-resolved detection of - skipping orbits in a Hall bar, - Andreev reflection - Interaction between electrons and phonons - ... 4. Improvement of the resolution of detection 5. Other detectors and sources for excitation
