Project objective
Research objectives and content In a variety ;of important electroweak processes perturbative calculation break down because of the appearance of resonant effects, and a resummation is needed. Resumming bosonic corrections while preserving crucial properties such as gauge invariance and unitarity has been impossible in the past. Recently a resummation formalism has been developed based on the pinch technique which accomplishes this task. I propose to apply this formalism to compute resonant transition amplitudes involving the Higgs boson. Resonant effects appear also in the study of CP violation in several extensions of the Standard Model. In addition, implementation of the pinch technique amplitudes into Monte Carlo codes is necessary, especially for important processes such as Higgs strahlung at LEP2. A major challenge for QCD is to describe quantitatively the physics of - diffractive scattering. I propose to study the mechanism of dynamical gluon mass generation in order to explain some of the properties of the Donnachie-Landshoff pomeron within QCD. To that end I intend to study gauge-invariant Schwinger-Dyson equations and massive gauge invariant Yang-Mills models. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I expect that an opportunity to conduct research at CERN for two years will be very valuable for my overall education as a particle physicist. There is a plethora of subjects to which I intend to be exposed, ranging from super string techniques to Monte Carlo codes. In particular, I expect to be able to interact with some of the experimental groups. All the above experience will be very useful upon my return to my home country. Links with industry/industrial relevance (22) There are no direct industrial applications connected to my research. Nonetheless I will be exploring theoretical issues related to machines such as LEP2 and LHC, which constitute the cutting edge in technology, and several indirect industrial applications are expected to emerge from the experiments
