Project objective
Research obiectives and content Direct reactions such as elastic and inelastic scattering and transfer reactions allow to study nuclear sizes and shapes and the microscopic structure of nuclear states which are fundamental properties of nuclei. Since very recently such studies, which form the basis of our understanding of stable nuclei, can be extended to nuclei far from stability through the use of radioactive nuclear beams. The proposed research programm will make use of the radioactive beams available at the GANIL facility (large scale europeen facility,Caen France) and advanced instrumentation to study the properties of light neutron rich nuclei. The first part of the program is focused on studying nuclear matter distributions and the nucleus-nucleus interaction potential through elastic scattering. We intend to measure the elastic scattering cross sections for the neutron rich oxygen isotopes 200 and 220 and the stable isotope 160 from proton and 12C targets, taking advantage of the high resolution spectrometer SPEG used in conjunction with beam tracking detectors and the silicon strip detector array MUST currently under construction. I will have the responsibility of setting up, testing the experiment, analysing the data and collaborating with theoreticians from our institute to compare the data to the predictions of the latest nuclear models. The second part of the program involves a technical developement for radioactive beam experimeriments. In order to measure large angle stuttering with the MUST detector, the device must be upgraded to measure high energy protons by adding a third detection stage to the Silicom strip Si(Li) telescopes. I will peform tests to select the most suitable scintillation material and read-out and will be in charge of mechanical design and definition of the electronics for this upgrade. Training content (objective benefit and expected impact) The objective is to become proficient the fields of physics of unstable nuclei and instrumentation for experiments performed with radioactive nuclear beams. Such training will be highly beneficial in the per- spective of the EXCIT project, which is an extention of the Catania accelerator facility for the production of radioactive beams.
