Project objective
Research objectives and content The Wittig reaction, in which a phosphorus ylide reacts with a carbonyl group, constitutes one of the most important and useful synthetic routes to alkenes. We plan to build on recent research (by Vicente et al) which has shown that phosphorus Ylides can react with (i) carbonyl groups on coordinated ligands to give transition metal complexes featuring ortho-alkenylaryl ligands, and (ii) coordinated benzonitrile to give complexes featuring imidophosphorane ligands. The class of compounds in (i) may have significant application in the field of non-linear optics and organometallic polymers, while imidophosphoranes are used widely as key intermediates in the synthesis of natural products. We expect to develop a range of novel complexes featuring C-C linkages formed by the reaction of phosphorus Ylides with pi-coordinated ligands. We will use the resulting phosphonium salts in Wittig reactions The results could have significant industrial relevance. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The research project will make a significant contribution to the COST D2 action entitled The Design of Novel Palladium-Catalysed Routes to Selective Synthesis of Carbocyclic and of N, O and S-Heterocyclic Compounds" (Project D2/0002/95). Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The host group has contacts with fine chemical industries (DERIVADOS QUIMICOS). which have showed interest in the kind of chemistry we propose in the project.
