Project objective
Research objectives and content What is the number and population of binary stars in the core regions of Globular Clusters? It expected from dynamical simulations that post core-collapse clusters have many binaries, but so far fe have been discovered. We are conducting a unique, systematic photometric survey for core binaries outburst, with our 2nd-generatio4 multiband high-resolution camera. HST/WFPC2 images provide t astrometric positions of thousands of stars, vastly reducing profile-fitting photometric scatter. Howeve the resulting CPU/memory requirements mean that only high-performance parallel computing faciliti can exploit this - and similarly, our deconvolution-based star-detection technique - without introduci edge-effect errors. We propose therefore to parallelise various codes for image restoration al photometry. This will yield optimal photometric datasets and subtracted images. We will search the for characteristic binary behaviour. This process also yields further science - the most comprehensifl survey yet of intrinsic variable stars in the central regions. The acquisition of the required imagery h already been arranged. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) EPCC (Edinburgh) is a leading training organisation in scientific computing. Their frequent cous would help me to write the best parallel code and benefit my overall computation skills. My host group would teach me their simulation methods, expanding my competence to new fields.
