Project objective

Research objectives and content Global geodynamic mantle models allow us to exploit the constraints derived from global data sets. Results from seismic tomography, the geoid, and geo- chemical probing are explained dynamically by mantle convection. Therefore their interpretation must combine rigorous fluid dynamic modeling with observations of the geological record. An important constraint on mantle convection for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic is provided by the history of past plate motion. I propose to investigate the temporal evolution of mantle flow since the Mesozoic using a 3-D spherical geodynamic mantle convection model that includes the record of past plate motion (150 My). The proposed research will improve our understanding of the dynamic evolution of mantle density anomalies and mantle mixing. I propose to conduct this research at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris.
