Project objective
Research objectives and content Transition metal clusters are considered as low oxidation state organometallic precursors for the preparation of supported catalysts. The objective of this project is (i) to prepare heterometallic bismuth-based clusters in which this element is associated with a noble metal like palladium or ruthenium, and (ii) to use these compounds as molecular precursors for the preparation of heterometallic supported catalysts. The first step is to prepare, purify, and characterize new bimetallic bismuth-metal clusters. The second step deals with the investigation of the thermal behaviour of the synthesised clusters. The third step is the incorporation of these precursors on an adequate support. The final step is the use of these bismuth-metal catalysts in partial oxidation reactions, and their characterization at each step of their preparation and after their use in oxidation. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project will enable the applicant to learn the specific methods requested for clusters synthesis and characterization. On the other hand, analytical techniques will be necessary to understand the effect of catalysts structure on performances. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Bismuth-based catalysts display a huge potential as highly selective systems for partial oxidation in gaseous or liquid phase and especially in the area of fine chemicals.
