Project objective
Determining the caloric curve of hot nuclei, the ALADIN collaboration has obtained the best proof for the predicted liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. The observation that signatures of a phase transition can be detected despite of the strong dynamics of a nuclear collision are very important in view of the huge efforts made worldwide to find the transition to the quark-gluon plasma.Up to now the spectator parts emerging from a peripheral Au-Au collision have been measured. A much bigger system showing even stronger dynamics could be investigated in form of the interaction region of an Au-Au collision at an energy around 100 MeV per nucleon. For this experiment the best detector existing for heavy ion reactions - the INDRA detector from GANIL, France - will be brought to GSI in Darrnstadt end of '97 in order to verify the liquid-gas phase transition in the presence of strong collective flow. Trainig content: The combination of two detectors - INDRA and ALADIN - will have the complexity of typical high energy experiments and will provide the best possible training in the field of experimental nuclear physics. Working in an international collaboration on one of the most interesting topics of nuclear reactions the candidate will obtain an excellent training for his later research career. Nearly unnecessary to say that he will obtain excellent training in fast electronics, and on-line and off-line computing. Links with industry: This training could directly be used if the candidate stays at an university or research lab. But also for industry a broad knowledge in the experimental techniques of nuclear physics and the experience of working in an international collaboration are important.
