Project objective
The aim of this network is to organise a coordinated effort between months. Each of them will be focused on the main tasks of their host university and industry partners for the development of the newly discovered Nonlinear Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (NOMOKE) for magnetic institution, but will also spend several periods at the other partners institutions to get familiar with all aspects of the project. In particular interface studies and the exploration of its potential applicability for magnetic imaging. Magnetic multilayers show exciting new properties like this will include short visits at the laboratories of the industrial partner(s). The total time spend on this activity may vary from one post Giant Magneto Resistance and oscillatory exchange coupling, that have a doc to the other, but will amount to approximately 6 to 12 months total. great potential for practical applications in sensors and for recording. For these systems, the interfaces between the various metallic films play This programme will also benefit from other related EC projects that we are an essential role, but experimentally they are very hard to investigate by involved in, which will increase the possibilities for international exchange of students. standard magnetic probes. We propose to study the properties of magnetic (multilayer) films using the Nonlinear Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (NOMOKE), which is not only interface specific, but has been shown to lead to Nonlinear Kerr rotations that are three orders of magnitude larger than its linear counterpart. We will also explore the possibilities to use the observed huge Nonlinear Kerr rotations for magnetic imaging. Though at present this will be mostly relevant for laboratory studies, the continuing rapid developments in laser technology may lead to future practical applications for this nonlinear magneto-optical effect.
