Project objective
The proposed work is an experimental study of the flow field generated in a water tunnel by the injection of an axisymmetric jet against the direction of the main flow. The objective of the study is a deeper investigation of this physical phenomenon, on which the few existing studies still do not allow a satisfactory understanding, limiting therefore its possible applications. At the same time, the experiments will provide the opportunity for further enhancement and development of the advanced measuring techniques which are applied. The experiments will be carried out through LIF (Laser-Induced Fluorescence), which allows flow visualization and concentration measurements, and digital PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), which yields instantaneous two-dimensional velocity measurements. Apart from the theoretical importance in the study of turbulence, the jet in counterflow can find practical applications in general for mixing phenomena and in particular for cooling systems or for combustion control in jet engines.
