Project objective

Research objectives and content The research aims to provide a better microstructural understanding of a forming process of Zy4 products: hot extrusion. Zy4 is an alloy made essentially of Zirconium, and exhibits a highly anisotropic mechanical behavior that is currently not accounted for when using isotropic finite element (FEM) codes. To solve a forming problem, a viscoplastic polycrystalline self-consistent model developed by Lebensohn with CEMEF (the host institution) may be coupled to the FEM code Forge3 (Iboth commercial codes Belonging to CEMEE;). At each deformation step, the anisotropic rheology is calculated inside each finite element, and the corresponding texture is updated. The metallurgical evolutions will be observed as a result of plastic deformation alone (quench), but also after post-process static recrystallization (heat treatments). Training content (objective benefit and expected impact) The work content in this project requires a good knowledge of 3 fields: Modeling of metal plasticity at 2 scales: a) FEM large deformations in 3 dimensions (macroscopic), and b) polycrystalline models including metallurgy (microscopic) Experiments: mechanical tests, texture measurements, use of electronic and optical microscopes, electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD), etc. Computer Science: UNIX system, FORTRAN programming, codes coupling, etc. The first field is well mastered thanks to my previous studies. However, I will need intensive training in the two other fields. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) CEZUS (=Compagnie Europeenne de Zirconium Ugine-Sandvick) is the only European company specialized in the hot forming processesor Zirconium alloys. Their collaboration provides crucial know-how, as well as results from << real size >> experiments.
