Project objective

Research objectives and content I intend to perform experimental investigations and numerical simulations on the Extraordinary Hall Effect (EHE) in structures of mesoscopic lateral dimensions (20nm-10,pim), patterned from ultrathin ferromagnetic films and multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In particular, I shall study the interplay between the domain structure and EHE, and how these are modified by varying the width and geometry of the stripes and Hall contacts. In a further step, I shall introduce nano-size defects in a controlled manner (e.g., constrictions, pinholes,...) in order to study (e.g., using EHE) how such defects influence the dynamics of motion of domain walls, with special emphasis on the study of activation process versus temperature. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The research project presented here would allow me to acquire valuable experience in a number of experimental techniques (ultrathin films fabrication and characterization, patterning techniques, magnetic microscopies, transport and galvanomagnetic measurements), as well as skills in numerical simulation of transport properties in mesostructures. These techniques are highly relevant to industrial needs for ultrahigh density recording, which should enhance my employment prospects after my PhD. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The host group has an ongoing collaboration with the 'Laboratoire Central de Recherche' of Thomson-CSF (Orsay) on subjects related to transport properties of mesoscopic magnetic structures (see enclosed letter from Dr. T. Valet).
