Project objective
Research objectives and content The proposed project aims to a new mass determination of the charged pion (in the order of 1 ppm), using high precision X-ray spectroscopy. The result will have implications on fundamental physics (muon neutrino mass) and applied physics (new precise X-ray energy standards). The contents of this work program to achieve the objective is conjunction of high precision experiment, which will be performed at Paul Scherrer Institut, with a state of the art analysis including the development of a set of efficient computational techniques, which will be performed at the Host Institute. Special topics are the development of a Monte- Carlo ray-tracing program simulating focusing Bragg crystal spectrometers, line-shape modelling of the emitted X-ray spectra, read-out and data analysis of two dimensional position sensitive detectors (CCD), progress in recently developed codes to compute transitions energies in hydrogen-like fermionic and bosonic atoms and refinement of atomic cascade calculations. These algorithmic tools will be applied for optimization of the experimental set-up and for the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data. Finally, the development of the programs aims towards a general purpose software package to be used in the field of X-ray spectroscopy, supporting a wide range of applications in this research area. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The proposed project offers a broad educational training at highest level in the following subjects: High precision-high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, computer science (data analysis, data handling, information theory), atomic, nuclear and elementary particle physics, optics and electronics, beam-time experiments. The project offers to me the chance to be educated in the field of the computer science and to adapt methods and techniques which can be used to solve numerous problems faced in the region of high precision X-ray spectroscopy. With the intention of the Host Institute to support the genesis of a new X-ray spectroscopy research group, my expertise in the field will push forward to its foundation. This will direct to a high level, up-to-date, scientific knowledge and technology transfer to my country. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
