Project objective

This study aims to aid conservation of the barbel Barbus barbus through the development of a recruitment model to help predict fluctuations in year-class strength due to variations in climatic conditions and water pollution levels. The objectives to achieve this aim will be to: 1) determine the impact of elevated suspended matter and nutrient levels on barbel reproduction; 2) estimate the mortality of barbel eggs, larvae and juveniles in the field and laboratory; 3) investigate the emergence and dispersal behaviour of young barbel; 4) develop a mathematical model for predicting year-class strength 5) offer suggestions for management strategies for the restoration of the barbel's natural habitat. The deliverables expected to result from the proposed study are: 1) a series of articles in high-quality, peer-reviewed international scientific journals; 2) a mathematical recruitment model for predicting year-class strength; and 3) recommendations for management strategies for the restoration of the barbel's natural habitat.
